Celebrity…read all about it
It is difficult to explain the curiosity level regarding what is going on in the life of a celebrity. Perhaps it is because many feel like their favorite celebrity is part of the family. For others it is an interest in seeing how closely their real life compares to the persona of their character on television, movies or other venue. We are not just interested in when they do well, but also when they fail. People simply love gossip even though many won’t admit it.
It is because of a deep desire to know what is going on in celebrity circles that websites dedicated to blogging about them continue to gain popularity. With hundreds, perhaps thousands, of blogs out there the question becomes how to choose a good one. The main considerations when it comes to celebrity blogs is timing, accuracy and being fun to browse. The following top ten celebrity blogs are ranked due to traffic as averaged from four rating systems, but don’t let that keep you from looking at them all. One style may be more suited to you than another. Consider also that each website will often have a different spin on the same topic so getting the scoop from more than one might just prove enlightening. (Note: Rating numbers listed under website link are the current Alexa.com Global and U.S. traffic ratings. Alexa is just one of the four rating systems used in the average.)
What began as a hobby for Miami born Mario Armando Lavandeira, Jr. quickly became far more than that. Within six months of beginning in March 2005, his blog which was at PageSixSixSix.com at that time was already attracting global attention – so much so that traffic was too heavy for the server at one point. Just about every article out there about this blogger says you will either love him or hate him. Perhaps this could really be taken a step further to be that he really is someone you love to hate. Clearly a few celebrities haven’t been too happy with his viewpoint. That could very well be one of the reasons this celebrity blog site is so popular though – he is not afraid to stick his neck out there on any topic, any celebrity and any situation. The main home page also has tabs to take you to CocoPerez, Perezitos, FitPerez and TeddyHilton. A key feature of the blog is the ability to search for gossip on your favorite (or hated) personality through the Star Seeker search at the top of the screen.
TMZ is more than a blog – it is a news site that just happens to concentrate on celebrities. Unlike blogs that are begun by individuals, TMZ began as a partnership between Telepictures Productions and AOL. This site is popular for those that prefer substance over opinion – in other words, they prefer accuracy. The downside of them taking time to research for authentic stories is the inevitable delay in getting those stories out there. However, with that research often comes one other benefit. They often get more of the story than other celebrity websites, leaving many of them to simply restate what TMZ has already reported. Add to that their penchant for getting exclusive details and it is easy to see why this website is ranked #2.
These three websites all have the same Alexa.com rating because they are all part of one entity. Using the 4-rating system averages, ValleyWag ranks 3rd, Defamer ranks 5th and Gawker ranks 6th. Alexa.com rates them as one entity, thus they are placed on this list together in the 3rd spot. In reality the Defamer blog is no longer being fed separately and instead is part of Gawker. The main difference between the sites is subjects being reported about. While both cover what is going on in the entertainment celebrity world, Valleywag also covers news about things going on in Silicon Valley (hence the moniker, Valleywag.) The attraction to these sites is an informal blog style of reporting and the addition of more than just Hollywood celebrity gossip.
Those that enjoy photos will love this celebrity blog website. The visual presentation of this blog is a nice escape. Their photo section is nicely organized into seven useful categories: Most Recent, Hot Bodies, Candid, Red Carpet, Sightings, Most Important People and Crap We Missed. Also, right on the home page are two categories called So Freaking Hot and Superficial Favorites. One of the great things about this site is that the commentary itself is generally nice and short, making this site perfect for those that prefer to look at pictures than read too much. You may not learn a lot of information here, but those photos are worth taking a look at.
Although not all pictures like Superficial, this website is most definitely dedicated to bikinis. With new pictures added regularly as well as quite a few blogs, this site appears to be mostly interested in reporting what the female celebs are doing and wearing. There is the occasional post about something else, but they are few and far between. It lacks the organization of other sites but is still good for getting those eyeballs on a number of celebrities. The blogs are more opinion than news, but that is fun to read too.
Pretty much their tagline says it all – because men think differently. With sections devoted to Stuff Guys Like and The Hot 5, this website is a hit with men out there. The site is not just about celebrity gossip either. Under the heading Stuff Guys Like there are five subheadings: TV & Film, Gaming, SuperEgo, Gear and Celebrities. One of the more unique sections of the website is devoted to humor and includes stores that are downright hilarious. The oddest and strangest news out there fits into this category and it alone makes this site worth checking out regularly. Laughter is good for you, so here’s a great way to get your doctor recommended daily dose.
A combination of news and gossip about the famous folks out there and also those that just get their 15 minutes of fame. There are a couple of unique things about this blog site that are interesting. First of all, each article is tagged on the left with a word or short phrase giving you an idea what to expect in the article. This is quite a time saver. Another thing that makes this blog site popular is the huge diversity of articles. There is a little bit of everything pretty much insuring you will find something of interest.
A whimsical site to see just how badly some celebrities and other famous people need a reliable mirror. Granted there is more to this site than that, including very nicely written articles, but photos of fashion blunders have done much for the popularity of this site. The reason for this is that while we love to adore celebrities we also like to know they can make human mistakes just like the rest of us. A rather fun part of the site is being able to vote on various wardrobe choices and then see the voting results.
For the most part this is just like most average blogs. However, there is one aspect that sets it up to be on this list. There is a uniquely personal side of the blogs. We don’t only read about what is going on in the world of celebrities, but we also find out a bit about the writer. When he goes to the movies, we know it. When he runs in a marathon, we know it. This personal touch probably lends itself to faithful followers that not only want a glimpse into famous lives but also into the writer’s life. These personal updates are among various reviews in The TV Guide section of the website.
One of the interesting features of Pop Sugar is their annual POPSUGAR 100 in which they tally up millions of votes from readers to get the top 100 stars. The list is not just celebrities – anyone famous can end up on the list. They’ve been doing this for seven years now and it is quite popular. Another unique feature of this site is a category called The Royals that includes news, articles and gossip on royal families. The website is well organized with headings and subheadings as well as a search feature. If you get bored with celebrity news, you can also switch over to other categories such as fashion, beauty, fitness, entertainment, love & sex, food, living, moms, social, Shopstyle and must have. There is no shortage of trending information to be found here.
With these ten celebrity blog sites at your fingertips it is unlikely that you will ever miss important news about the celebrities you care most about. You’ll know who is pregnant, who is engaged, who is being sued, and who has been arrested almost as quickly as if they actually were a member of your family. Such is the price of fame – your life becomes an open book.
