When eReaders first came out, most people expected that they’d be able to read their favorite best sellers at a price far less than buying the hardcover book. Surprisingly, that hasn’t really been the case, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy plenty of reading at a cost of next to nothing. The number of free and discounted eBooks has skyrocketed as of late with more and more budding authors offering their books at huge discounts to introduce you to their talent. More books are available in eBook format than in print. The only trick is finding these hidden gems. The following websites have sprung up as resources to locate discount eBooks. You’ll never run out of reading material, or break your budget, as long as you can forgo some of the best sellers. The sites given are listed in order of their Alexa traffic count rating.

Project Gutenberg offers over 45,000 free eBooks offered as epub books and kindle. You can download them from the site or read them online. The benefit of this site is that you’ll only find high quality eBooks that were previous published by bona fide publishers. Volunteers have worked to digitize them and although they offer them for free, they are grateful for donations as well as volunteers.

They offer eBooks for all sorts of eReader devices, so you really have to take the time to understand how it works so you do not purchase the wrong format. The plus side of this site is that they have a huge selection of eBooks in a multitude of formats. The downside is that it isn’t easy to locate discounted titles. It is a wonderful source for bestsellers and also academic eBooks. You can sign up for their newsletter to get notified of specials and new titles.

This site is specifically for Kindle users, but you can easily obtain the Kindle app for your computer or smartphone if you don’t own a Kindle eReader. You can sign up for bestselling Kindle deals to be sent to your inbox each day or browse the website. A nice feature is the ability to add a wish list for eBooks you want should they ever become discounted. You can search and sort Kindle lending library books, for example, so you can get the most from your ability to borrow eBooks. The search features on this site are spectacular. You can also subscribe to the Kindle Nation Daily Digest. The site is great for reading reviews on popular books and using their eBook Tracker. The tracker is a great tool for authors and publishers as well.

The list is nice to view with a picture of the book cover and a 5-star rating system shown. Click on the picture or title and you are taken to a description of the book. Click on Fresh Stock and the page will refresh with new choices. They also have some Kindle Tools section and a Newsletter. You can also browse books by subject.

Pixel of Ink is a source for free and bargain Kindle eBooks. They also have a sister site that offers Christian and Faith-Based Kindle book deals called Inspired Reads. You can subscribe for a daily email from them as well.

The site includes things such as the Free Android App of the Day and a Free MP3 of the Day. One thing different about this site is they offer both deals for those in the U.S. and also in the UK. You’ll also find hot new releases for Kindle on this website.

Simple categories make this an easy to use website – Daily Showcase, Daily Deals, Free Books, $.99 Books, Bargain Books and Last Chance Deals are located near the bottom of the main page as well as tabbed at the top. You can also find them on Facebook for a more social environment. The downside is that they don’t send out emails, so you’ll have to go to the site each day or as needed for find the deals.
You will likely notice that many of these sites have the same titles in their newsletters each day, so you may find yourself using only one or two of them for that purpose, while using the website itself for others and for the other content they offer. In any case, you’ll soon have hundreds, if not thousands, of inexpensive and free eBooks just waiting for you to be able to curl up in chair and drift into the magic.
