Reading the classics is not something you just have to do in school – for many it is a lifelong passion and a goal to read as many as possible during one’s life. This could get pretty expensive if it weren’t for the fact that so many organizations have been diligently working on providing not only great eBooks, but making them available free of charge. If you’ve missed any of the great classics, you will enjoy these ten websites. Some offer downloadable versions while others must be read online. This site lists over 1 million free books on the Internet. You can search by author or by title or a combination of both. There are examples given on the search page to aid you in knowing how to best conduct a search. The site also includes news, features, archives and more. One interesting feature is the banned books online feature. It is amazing to see how many books were at one time or another banned somewhere.

Project Gutenberg offers over 45,000 free eBooks. They offer free epub books and free kindle books. You can download them or read them online. They also have a link in which you can locate over 100,000 free eBooks through their partners, affiliates and resources. The search capabilities on this site are phenomenal as they have a huge number of categories for topics to streamline your search. You can get far more than just popular books and classics here.

Bartleby describes themselves as the preeminent Internet publisher of literature, reference and verse providing students, researches and the intellectually curious with unlimited access to books and information on the web, free of charge. The site is arranged with drop down boxes on the right under the headings reference, verse, fiction and nonfiction. The main page also has a section for featured authors and Harvard classics. A drop down box at the top lets you search by various categories as well.

This site has hundreds of classic books that can all be read for free. The main page includes a list of recent additions as well as a link to view all authors and a link to view book list by title. Once you have selected a book to read, it comes up in your browser. At any point in the book, you can save the page to your bookmarks or favorites to pull it up at that page at a later time. The site is very easy to navigate.

When you click on a title, it gives you the author, date written, number of pages, a brief section of the book and a download button that notes the size of the file. You can view the offerings either in order by title or by author. Since there aren’t a lot of books on this site, it is pretty easy to view the lists. Should they grow in the future, they will need to add a better way to browse the books.

Registration is free and does not require the disclosure of any personal information. As a member you can also use various tools, including being able to add annotations. This is not a huge selection, but you just might find something you weren’t able to locate elsewhere. You might also enjoy being able to read the book online. They are not downloadable, however.
