Want free classic literature?

Reading the classics is not something you just have to do in school – for many it is a lifelong passion and a goal to read as many as possible during one’s life. This could get pretty expensive if it weren’t for the fact that so many organizations have been diligently working on providing not only great eBooks, but making them available free of charge. If you’ve missed any of the great classics, you will enjoy these ten websites. Some offer downloadable versions while others must be read online. They are listed in order of their Alexa traffic count rating.

1. The Online Books Page:

This site lists over 1 million free books on the Internet. You can search by author or by title or a combination of both. There are examples given on the search page to aid you in knowing how to best conduct a search. The site also includes news, features, archives and more. One interesting feature is the banned books online feature. It is amazing to see how many books were at one time or another banned somewhere.

2. Project Gutenberg:

Project Gutenberg offers over 45,000 free eBooks. They offer free epub books and free kindle books. You can download them or read them online. They also have a link in which you can locate over 100,000 free eBooks through their partners, affiliates and resources. The search capabilities on this site are phenomenal as they have a huge number of categories for topics to streamline your search. You can get far more than just popular books and classics here.

3. Bartleby:

Global Alexa Rating: 31,558

Bartleby describes themselves as the preeminent Internet publisher of literature, reference and verse providing students, researches and the intellectually curious with unlimited access to books and information on the web, free of charge. The site is arranged with drop down boxes on the right under the headings reference, verse, fiction and nonfiction. The main page also has a section for featured authors and Harvard classics. A drop down box at the top lets you search by various categories as well.

4. Page By Page Books:

This site has hundreds of classic books that can all be read for free. The main page includes a list of recent additions as well as a link to view all authors and a link to view book list by title. Once you have selected a book to read, it comes up in your browser. At any point in the book, you can save the page to your bookmarks or favorites to pull it up at that page at a later time. The site is very easy to navigate.

5. Planet eBook:

This site offers 80+ free classics for download that are all high-quality. When you click on a title, it gives you the author, date written, number of pages, a brief section of the book and a download button that notes the size of the file. You can view the offerings either in order by title or by author. Since there aren’t a lot of books on this site, it is pretty easy to view the lists. Should they grow in the future, they will need to add a better way to browse the books.

6. Classic Reader:

At the current time, this site offers 3,810 titles by 358 authors. You can browse the library by one of eight categories (fiction, non-fiction, young readers, poetry, Shakespeare, short stories, drama and classical) or you can browse through their list of authors or titles. The main page also lists the more recent titles. Anyone can read the books on the site, but you must be a registered user to download the complete book. Registration is free and does not require the disclosure of any personal information. As a member you can also use various tools, including being able to add annotations. On this site you will find the full and unabridged texts of classic works of English literature. You can locate books by selecting the authors link which gives you a list of books by that particular author. This is not a huge selection, but you just might find something you weren’t able to locate elsewhere. You might also enjoy being able to read the book online. They are not downloadable, however.

This site offers a social aspect in that you can discuss books, join online book clubs and groups, and get recommendations from others – all for free! You can join by setting up an account or you can sign in with Facebook or Google. The online books are organized by essays, fiction, non-fiction, plays, poetry and short stores. You can also conduct a search using a keyword, title or author. At the bottom of the main page is the top 5 authors and top 5 books. There is also a listing of the top books to read online.

There are a number of useful tools on this site including the ability to read classics, read study guides and conduct research. In the read area you will find thousands of eBooks, poems, articles, short stories and plays that are free to read. The study guides can be of great help to students. You can also buy books that were personally read and recommended by Bibliomania.

This site is arranged a bit different than others in that you can choose from the following categories: All Classic Authors, Classic American Literature, Classic British Literature, Classic French Literature, Classic Irish Literature, Classic Italian Literature and Classic Scottish Literature. You’ll also find some interesting offerings on the main page including free recipes, the King James Bible and Fairy Tales & Children’s Books.

When it comes to books, you can always find something of interest out on the Internet and finding a great read for free is like icing on the cake. If you are a student, you can also look for sites that offer free textbooks which is a great way to make getting an education a little less costly. It is just like with everything these days, if you take the time to research you can probably find a great deal.
