Senior moments…

Before you know it, the lucky amongst us will be facing issues that almost all seniors face eventually. The following ten websites have been selected for various reasons – from senior health to senior travel and a few things in between. Although you may have an issue not covered here, these are the most commonly experienced by seniors and some sites also give links to more specific circumstances. The ten sites listed are in order of their Alexa traffic count rating.

1. NIH Senior Health:

It can be really difficult to get the most of those golden years when health issues limit the activities you can do. Hopefully with the advice and topics on this website, you can keep as healthy as possible for as long as possible. The site includes free tips on healthy aging, exercise stories and so much more, all written to address senior health specifically. There are articles as well as videos and training tools.

Seniors can often need legal assistance with issues that they never expected to have yet can be quite common as we get older. Issues such as estate planning, Medicaid planning, health care decisions, long-term care issues and retirement planning are all issues that many elderly people need to get answers to. This site includes plenty of articles for general information as well as a directory of elder law attorneys for when professional services are needed. The Q&A section and tools & calculators section are useful areas to visit.

This website addresses a number of topics in regards to reaching retirement. It gives practical advice for activities, wealth management, health, relationships and work. You’ll find articles on such topics as lifelong learning, hobbies, estate planning, frugal living, retirement planning, pets, senior sex, nutrition, job search tips for seniors and much more. A nice feature is a free assessment for figuring out just what retirement activities could be great for you based on your unique personality although you will have to register with them to take advantage of this feature.

4. Work Force 50:

There are many reasons why people over 50 still want or need to be an active participant in the workplace. For some it is a need to keep busy and because they truly enjoy what they do or perhaps want to explore a new career altogether. It can be wonderful to work for the satisfaction and not because the income is needed for raising a family. In other cases, a person may not yet be financially ready to fully retire or wants to shore up their retirement savings to have a more luxurious lifestyle upon retirement. In any case, this website will be very helpful at not only locating work but also getting career resources regarding overcoming the challenges of finding work as a senior.

5. IDF50 (I don’t feel 50!):

For some, reaching 50 and beyond can be a bit depressing – but not with a good laugh from this website and connecting with others that have found a lot of life after 50 after all. The site includes humor, member photo galleries, member’s art galleries and member videos that will quickly have you realizing that you don’t have to feel whatever age you are. The site also includes forums including photography forums and art forums.

6. Eldertreks:

Retirement is a wonderful time to get out and see more of the world and this site is designed specifically for locating exotic adventures for travelers 50+ years of age. They offer adventures all over the world including Africa, Antarctica, Arctic, Asia, Caribbean, Central America, North America, South America, Europe, Middle East and more. You can find tours based on interest such as archeological tours, cultural tours, driving tours, photography tours, cycling tours and much more. They have tours for every level of activity from easy to challenging. The trip finder is a great tool for searching by region, within a region, adventure style and activity level.

7. Suddenly Senior:

This is a fantastic site full of over 4,450 pages of humor, nostalgia, senior advocacy and useful information for seniors 50+. It is a nationally syndicated column. The downside of the site is that it doesn’t seem to have any new postings since one posted November 12, 2012, but the bright side is there is still plenty to enjoy from past postings. They call themselves the place for everyone who’s become senior before their time – which means pretty much everyone, doesn’t it? The senior trivia section is a riot!

8. Geezer Guff:

Global Alexa Rating: 2,575,440

This is a great site for funny and feisty seniors. Follow Geezer Bill’s retirement life through random posts about things he is doing in his retirement. The site also offers other sections including retirement ramblings, geezer satire, links to various senior humor sites and links to videos on YouTube about seniors. There are also some interesting categories such as health, learning, scams and senior resources.

9. CyberParent Grandparents’ Web:

Global Alexa Rating: 3,577,960

While not all seniors are grandparents, many are or are even great grandparents or great great grandparents, so this site will be a great resource for all things to do with being a grandparent. There are tons of articles of interest to grandparents along with activities to do with grandchildren. It is not a fancy website, but there is a lot of useful information.

10. GrandmaBetty:

Global Alexa Rating: 4,949,276

Grandma Betty has done something that is truly remarkable with her site – she has compiled a ton of senior resources all in one spot. She has them carefully organized into great classifications such as technology for seniors, entertainment, health and fitness, grandparenting, baby boomer sites, genealogy, crafts/hobbies, news, wine cellar, pets and more. You’ll also enjoy reading her story by selecting the ‘about’ link at the top of the page. She is a testament to the fact that you can use your retirement years to still do good in the world.

There is no reason not to have every opportunity to enjoy those golden years. If you are 50 or older (or want to help someone who is), you’ll find plenty of useful information on these sites. Life is what you make it – so go make it great!
